Some thoughts from the winter storm a couple weeks ago.
• Better unnecessarily prepared than wanting. Have at least a Plan B for water, shelter, food, and sanitation, and preferably Plans C and D for when Plan B fails. The more layers your preparation has, the more resilient you are, and the less fragile.
• Better lucky than smart. We were very lucky. We never lost power. Apparently we share our circuit with some critical bit of infrastructure or influential person. Plan B for power is a portable gas generator, which we loaned to friends who had no power and had no Plan B.
• Being cold sucks. Weather gets much farther from 98.6 degrees in the coldward direction than hotward. Heat Plan B, if the electricity failed, was to huddle with dogs around the gas fireplace. Heat Plan C, if gas service failed, was … there was no Heat Plan C.
